Thank you for taking the time to share your story with me and our readers. I don't quite know which direction you will be taking this in. So this will be unique for me as well. Can you start off by sharing a little bit about you and what you do?
My name is Heidi Williams, and I am the Founder and CEO of Balcony Buddies. I was inspired to start my company during the Covid lockdowns of 2020 when I noticed how desolate and barren most balconies were. Balcony Buddies are container gardens that uniquely attach to vertical balusters of balcony railings with a removable cinch strap. It is easy to save space and add color to your railing with Balcony Buddies.
Everyone has a different perspective on how people meet and how paths crossed. Could you share how we met and what was going on in your life at that time?
I met Joseph in 2021 at the Denver Start-up Week when he stopped by my booth. I was just getting started as an entrepreneur and was feeling overwhelmed with all the things I needed to get done.
What was your first impression? And did that change at any point?
Haha! Joseph had several tattoos and I wondered to myself how much that hurt. In about 30 seconds I got such a great hit off Joseph. What a friendly, inquisitive, intelligent man!
Can you share a little bit the moment you realized an inflection point, and what it was that clicked for you?
Joseph seemed genuinely interested in learning about my new product. He asked a lot of questions and gave me very helpful marketing tips. When he said he had a high-rise apartment in downtown Denver with a balcony I was very excited. At that point I was desperate to get product photos from a real urban balcony but didn't know anyone who had one. Joseph was so generous and set up a time where I could take photos. He had me leave the plants there and made an incredible drone video for me! After the photo shoot we went and got a burger, and I couldn't believe the massive amount of entrepreneurial knowledge he had.
How did that impact you personally, and in what you were working on at the time?
Sitting across the table from Joseph live and in person was such a great experience for me. It is a very different than talking over a zoom call. I had so many things flying around in my head and was overwhelmed with launching a product all on my own. Joseph was a big help giving me advice and helping me focus on what was important.
How has that changed your outlook or progress in your personal, or entrepreneurial journey?
The biggest impact Joseph had was making me aware that I didn't have to do this all alone. It was nice to have someone welcome me into the Denver start-up family. Joseph asked me to speak at an event downtown which helped me build back confidence in presenting to a group.
What are you working on now? And how can our readers help or be a part of what you are up to?
I am gearing up for the Spring garden season right now. Last year Balcony Buddies were on Home Shopping Network.
